Motors: 2-Stroke vs 4-Stroke & Major Outboard Brands
Today nearly all brand-new outboards sold in North America are 4-Stroke, while the used boat market is still full of legendary Direct-Injection 2-Stroke motors (like the Mercury OptiMax, Yamaha VMAX HPDI, and Evinrude E-TEC). Knowing how they work saves you from costly mistakes.
| Feature | 2-Stroke Outboard (二冲程马达) | 4-Stroke Outboard (四冲程马达) |
|---|---|---|
| How It Fires | Fires on every piston up-down revolution (twice as many power strokes per RPM) | Fires on every second revolution (intake, compression, power, exhaust—like your car) |
| Oil System | Burns consumable 2-stroke oil (TC-W3 / DFI oil) mixed with fuel or injected from an oil reservoir | Uses closed-loop crankcase motor oil and an oil filter—never mix oil into the gas tank |
| Hole-Shot & Weight | Lighter weight and snappy low-end punch getting heavy boats on plane | Modern large-displacement V6/V8 4-strokes now match 2-stroke hole-shot with slightly more weight |
| Noise, Smoke & Fuel Use | Louder throatier growl; light oil smell at idle; uses 20%–35% more fuel + expensive DFI oil | Whisper-quiet idle (you can talk normally); zero smoke; 30%–40% better fuel economy |
| Maintenance Focus | No engine oil/filter to change, but you must never let the 2-stroke oil tank run dry or it seizes in seconds | Change engine oil & filter once a year (or every 100 hours); check timing belt and valve intervals |
Major Outboard Brands on Fishing Boats
| Brand & Flagship Line | Reputation & Key Traits |
|---|---|
| Mercury (Pro XS / FourStroke / Verado) | #1 market share on bass and multi-species boats; the 4.6L V8 Pro XS (200–250 HP) is light, sounds like a muscle car, and has the largest dealer network in North America |
| Yamaha (VMAX SHO / Gray Offshore) | Legendary bulletproof reliability; the 4.2L V6 VMAX SHO delivers massive mid-range torque and pairs factory-direct with Skeeter, Lund, and Ranger |
| Suzuki (DF Series / Stealth Line) | Uses an offset driveshaft and a deep 2.50:1 gear reduction ratio that swings a larger-diameter prop for incredible hole-shot with heavy loads |
| Honda (BF Series) & Tohatsu | Built on proven automotive/marine blocks; ultra-quiet, fuel-sipping workhorses especially popular in the 9.9 HP to 150 HP aluminum boat class |
Golden Rule on Horsepower Sizing: Check your hull's USCG / Transport Canada capacity plate and aim for 80% to 100% of the maximum rated HP. An underpowered boat (e.g. a 90 HP on a hull rated for 150 HP) struggles to climb on plane when the livewells are full, burns more gas because you have to run it wide-open everywhere, and is much harder to resell.
