Fish Measuring Boards & Tournament Rulers: Photo Verification Best Practices & Penalty Prevention
In kayak CPR tournaments, a single photo infraction can downgrade a winning lunker into a penalized loss. Mastering photo verification separates elite pros from amateurs.
1. The #1 Deduction: Open Mouth Penalty
- Cracked Mouth (< 1/4" gap): Standard 0.5" penalty deduction;
- Open Mouth (> 1/4" gap): Severe 1.0" penalty deduction;
- Snout not touching headstop: Complete score rejection (0" / Disqualified);
- Field Tip: Gently nudge the fish forward until the jaw makes positive contact, smooth the lower lip shut, and capture the photo before the fish shakes.
2. Anatomical Visibility & Gill Rules
- Hands Under Gills Prohibited: Fingers inside the operculum (gill flap) cause immediate disqualification;
- Eye Must Be Visible: The eye cannot be covered by hands, straps, or lures;
- Tail Flat on Scale: The tail must lie flat on the board surface; the furthest fin tip contacting the increment line determines length.
3. Glare Elimination & Token Protocol
- CPL Filter & Torso Shading: Use a clip-on circular polarizer or cast a soft body shadow over the board to eliminate hot glare spots on numbers;
- Tournament Identifier: Token code must be 100% visible and seated in the official Ketch ID slot;
- Burst Capture: Always shoot 3-5 images, release the bass safely, then select the sharpest photo for submission.
