Batteries & Chargers: Power Formulas: Watts to Amps & Daily Ah Calculations

You never have to guess what size battery to buy. Battery capacity is measured in Amp-Hours (Ah, 安时)—meaning a battery that delivers 1 Amp for 100 hours (or 10 Amps for 10 hours) has delivered 100 Ah. Follow these 3 simple formulas to calculate your exact boat setup.

The 3 Core Battery Math Formulas

  1. Formula 1 — Convert Device Power (Watts) to Current Draw (Amps):
  • Current (A) = Power (W) ÷ System Voltage (V)
  • Example: A 12-inch fish finder rated at 36 Watts (W) running on a 12 Volt (V) battery draws 36 W ÷ 12 V = 3.0 Amps (A) per hour. (If your manual already lists current in Amps or mA, divide mA by 1,000 to get Amps and skip straight to Formula 2!)
  1. Formula 2 — Calculate Daily Consumption (Ah) for Each Device:
  • Device Daily Consumption (Ah) = Current (A) × Hours On (h) × Duty Cycle (0 to 1)
  • What is Duty Cycle (工作占空比)? Fish finder screens and LiveScope black boxes draw power continuously while on (Duty Cycle = 100% = 1.0). A livewell aerator pump set on an auto-timer (runs 1 minute, pauses 2 minutes) only runs 1/3 of the time (Duty Cycle = 33% = 0.33).
  • Add up every device on that battery: Total Daily Drain (Ah) = Sum of all devices' Ah.
  1. Formula 3 — Convert Daily Drain into Required Battery Nameplate Capacity (Ah):
  • Recommended Battery Capacity (Ah) = Total Daily Drain (Ah) ÷ (Usable DoD × 0.85 Safety Margin)
  • For Lithium (LiFePO4, 90% usable DoD): Multiply your Total Daily Drain by 1.3.
  • For Lead-Acid / AGM (50% usable DoD): Multiply your Total Daily Drain by 2.35!

Worked Example 1: Sizing an Electronics "House" Battery for a 10-Hour Tournament Day

Suppose you fish a 10-hour tournament running:

  • Bow 12" Graph: 3.0 A × 10 h × 1.0 = 30 Ah
  • Console 12" Graph (put in standby half the day while on bow): 3.0 A × 10 h × 0.6 = 18 Ah
  • Garmin LiveScope GLS10 Black Box: 2.0 A × 10 h × 1.0 = 20 Ah
  • Livewell Pump on Auto-Timer (35% duty): 3.5 A × 10 h × 0.35 = 12.3 Ah
  • NMEA 2000 GPS Compass + Accessories: 0.5 A × 10 h × 1.0 = 5.0 Ah
  • Total Daily Consumption = 30 + 18 + 20 + 12.3 + 5.0 = 85.3 Ah!
  • If you buy Lithium (LiFePO4): 85.3 Ah × 1.3 = 111 Ah → A 12V 100Ah–125Ah LiFePO4 battery easily powers your entire electronics suite all day!
  • If you use Lead-Acid / AGM: 85.3 Ah × 2.35 = 200 Ah → A single Group 31 AGM (only ~55Ah usable) will die by 1:30 PM! You would need two heavy 100Ah AGMs in parallel.

Worked Example 2: Sizing Your 24V / 36V Trolling Motor Batteries

A trolling motor's specs list Max Amp Draw (e.g. 50A at 100% full speed), but nobody runs their trolling motor at speed 10 for 8 hours straight!

  • Calm-to-Moderate Day Duty Cycle (~15% average draw): Averages 6–8 Amps per hour → Over 8 hours = 48–64 Ah.
  • Heavy Wind / River Current Spot-Lock Day (~30% average draw): Averages 12–16 Amps per hour → Over 8 hours = 96–128 Ah.
  • Conclusion:
  • Two or three 12V 50Ah–60Ah Lithium batteries in series safely cover 90% of normal 8-hour inland lake trips.
  • Two or three 12V 100Ah Lithium batteries in series cover multi-day trips without charging or brutal 40 km/h winds on Lake Ontario / St. Lawrence River!
