Motors: Step-by-Step Northern Winterization Guide
In Canada and the northern US, temperatures plunge to -25 °C (-13 °F). Water expands by 9% when it freezes—enough force to crack a cast-aluminum lower unit or engine block wide open. Before the first hard freeze in November, follow these 6 steps in exact order:
| Step | Action | Why You Must Not Skip It |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1: Stabilize the Fuel System | Top up the tank (to minimize condensation air space), add Marine Fuel Stabilizer (Sta-Bil 360 / Mercury Quickstor), hook up flushing muffs (earmuffs) to a garden hose, and run the motor for 10–15 minutes | Simply pouring stabilizer into the tank does nothing if you don't run the engine—untreated gas sitting inside the high-pressure fuel rails and injectors will gum up over winter |
| Step 2: Fog the Cylinders (Internal Rust Protection) | On carbureted/2-stroke motors, spray fogging oil into intakes while running; on modern EFI 4-strokes, remove spark plugs, spray 3 seconds of Fogging Oil (or 1 tsp engine oil) into each cylinder, and crank the starter briefly (with kill switch pulled!) before reinstalling plugs | Coats cylinder walls and piston rings with a protective oil film so humid spring thaws cannot rust the bare steel bores |
| Step 3: Change 4-Stroke Engine Oil & Filter | Warm the engine on muffs, drain dirty crankcase oil, spin on a new oil filter, and fill with fresh FC-W marine oil | Used motor oil contains combustion acids and moisture that pit bearings and internal journals if left sitting for 5 months |
| Step 4: Drain & Inspect Lower Unit Gear Lube (CRITICAL!) | Place a pan under the skeg, remove the bottom drain plug first, then the top vent plug. Inspect the oil color: dark amber/green is healthy; milky coffee/cream color means water leaked past a seal! Refill from bottom up with fresh High-Performance Gear Lube | If water is trapped inside your lower unit over a Canadian winter, it will freeze solid and crack the aluminum gearcase housing—a $2,500+ repair! |
| Step 5: Drain Cooling Water & Store Vertically | Disconnect the garden hose, trim the outboard all the way DOWN (vertical), and let all water drain out of the water pump, block, and prop hub. Leave it trimmed down for winter storage | Outboards are self-draining only when vertical! If you leave the motor tilted up on a trailer bracket outdoors, rain and snow pool inside the prop exhaust hub, freeze, and crack the lower unit |
| Step 6: Prop Shaft Care, Fuel Filter & Batteries | Pull the propeller, remove any fishing line, coat the splines with 2-4-C Marine Grease, replace fuel-water separators, and disconnect/bring batteries indoors on a smart maintainer | Prevents the propeller from seizing onto the splines and keeps batteries from freezing or sulfating |
