Trolling Motors: Shaft Length Selection: 45" to 72" Measurement Guide

Getting the shaft length (轴长) right is just as important as thrust. The propeller needs to stay submerged at least 30 cm (12 in) below the surface—plus extra depth if you mount a Forward-Facing Sonar (LiveScope / ActiveTarget) transducer on the shaft!

How to Measure Your Boat in 2 Minutes

  1. Measure straight down from the top flat surface of your bow mounting deck to the waterline (while the boat is floating with normal gear, or measure to the waterline mark on the hull).
  2. Add +20 inches (50 cm) for calm-to-moderate inland lakes, OR add +25 inches (63 cm) if you fish rough open water where your bow pitches up and down in waves.

22"–28" (56–71 cm)45"–47"50"–52"Modern wide-body 19–21 ft bass boats ( especially when running a LiveScope transducer on the shaft!)
28"–34" (71–86 cm)52"–54"60"17–19 ft Deep-V aluminum/fiberglass boats (Lund, Princecraft, Crestliner)
35"–44" (89–112 cm)60"72"20–22 ft big-water Deep-V walleye boats & offshore bay boats

The "45-inch vs 52-inch" Bass Boat Dilemma

  • 45" (or 47") Shaft: The traditional bass boat choice. When raised in shallow water, the top head sits low and stays completely out of the way when you side-arm skip a jig under a low dock.
  • 52" (or 50") Shaft: Today's most popular all-around bass boat choice. When you fish offshore in 2–3 ft rollers and have a LiveScope transducer clamped 20 cm (8 in) above the motor cone, a 45" shaft often lifts the transducer out of the water on every wave crest. A 52" shaft keeps both the prop and your LiveScope beam buried cleanly below the waves.
