1. Anatomie et profil physiologique — Marigane (Photopériode et horloge saisonnière)
A Crappie Annual Clock: Spring/Fall Brush Highways vs Summer/Winter Basin Suspension : ① Spring 10-14°C channel staging & 14-20°C shallow reed/brush colony spawn · ② Summer 18-25°C deep brush & thermocline hover · ③ Fall 3-6 m wood gorge · ④ Winter 8-12 m basin school.
Le système physiologique de l'espèce (14-20°C Reed/Brush Colony · 20-25°C Thermocline Hover) fonctionne autour du seuil 20-25°C Thermocline Hover (14-20°C Reed/Brush Colony · 20-25°C Thermocline Hover · 16→8°C Timber Schooling · 4°C Deep Basin Suspend), dictant directement sa détection des proies et sa fenêtre d'attaque.

Run the article's temperature curve through a crappie and you get a different year than a bass's — earlier, deeper, and open all winter. Spring: crappie answer the warming curve ahead of bass, staging off black-bottom bays in waves and spawning colonially at 14–20 °C (57–68 °F), when largemouth are mostly still staging. This is the one season crappie are genuinely shallow and easy, and it comes in pulses — each warm front pushes a fresh wave in, each cold front pulls it back out.
Summer: while bass set up on weed and structure, crappie leave the cover story behind — schools suspend over open basins just above the thermocline, feeding at dawn, dusk, and night. Fall: turnover briefly scatters the basin world, then cooling water regroups schools tight on deep structure — the year's best numbers for those who find them. Winter is not an off-season at all: cold-water feeding continues, and up north the ice season is prime time.
Latitude stretches or squeezes everything, as always. A southern reservoir crappie's year is long and mild — spawn in March, deep timber in a mild "winter." An Ontario crappie spawns in late May–June, has weeks of summer, and spends a third of its life under ice, eating the whole time.

FAQ
What actually drives the crappie calendar through the year?
Two clocks running together: photoperiod (day length) sets the broad program, and water temperature executes it. That is why the sequence — winter basin, pre-spawn staging, colonial spawn, summer suspension, fall regrouping — is identical everywhere, while the dates slide enormously with latitude: crappie spawn in February–March in the southern US, April in the mid-latitudes, and late May into June across Ontario and the Canadian Shield. Fish the water temperature and the sequence, never the calendar page.
Why does the same crappie spot fire the same week every year?
Because the drivers repeat. The lake warms and cools on roughly the same schedule each year, plankton blooms follow the temperature, baitfish follow the plankton, and crappie follow the bait through the same physical funnels — the same creek arm, the same channel bend, the same basin edge. A spot that produced during 15 °C (59 °F) water last spring will produce near 15 °C (59 °F) water this spring, whether that lands a week early or two weeks late. Log water temperature with your catches and your own lake's pattern becomes a reusable map.
