1. Anatomie et profil physiologique — Achigan à grande bouche (Ligne latérale hydrodynamique)
A Largemouth Neuromasts & Low-Frequency Pressure (10-150 Hz) : ① Lateral sensory pore row · ② Scale canal entry · ③ Cupula deflection · ④ Afferent nerve pulse guiding zero-visibility strikes.

No black bass leans on its lateral line harder than the largemouth. It lives in stained water, dense weed, and shade — places where vision runs out fast — and the row of neuromasts along its flanks and head reads pressure waves and low-frequency vibration precisely enough to let it strike dead-center, in near-zero visibility, on a bait it never clearly saw. That is why the classic largemouth lures are all displacement machines: Colorado-blade spinnerbaits, bladed jigs, wide-wobble squarebills, and fat paddletails exist because a largemouth's lateral line locks onto "loud" water at close range.
Range is the caveat: fine targeting works within roughly one body length, so in muddy water the fish must nearly bump the bait before it can aim. It is also why a subtle finesse worm can go ignored in dirty water — it simply is not "loud" enough to be found. Slow down, shorten the distance between casts, and run repeated passes along the same edge — the second or third pass often gets found.
And it flips: in clear, calm, pressured water that same thump reads as unnatural. There the fish is hunting by eye, the lateral line only confirms, and a tight, quiet action or a near-still soft plastic outfishes the thumper.
- Muddy / heavy stain — maximum thump plus a bold silhouette.
- Stain — moderate vibration: chatterbait, squarebill.
- Clear — quiet baits; save the blades for wind and low light.
