Perch learning is school learning. An individual perch is not a quick study by carp standards, but it does not need to be — it outsources wariness to the group. When one fish is hooked and yanked flapping through two hundred of its neighbors, every fish in the school registers the event; when a dropped fish rejoins the group trailing alarm, the whole school tightens. This is why a hot hole cools in a predictable curve: the first dozen fish come easy, then the taps get shorter, then the school slides 30–50 m (98–164 ft) (33–55 yd) off. The angler's counters are mechanical — land fish smoothly and quickly, keep what you must keep instead of dropping educated fish back into the class, and treat a fading hole as a message to move, not to persist. Then there are the jumbos. A 30 cm (12 in) perch has survived 7–10 years of walleye, pike, cormorants, and every jig in the county; it is, almost by definition, the educated remnant of its year-class. Jumbos hang at the edge of the school, let the runts race to the bait, and inspect longer before committing — which is why the biggest fish of the day so often comes on the smallest, slowest, most natural presentation, off to the side of the crowd.
