Achigan PB: Breathing & oxygen

① 6-10 mg/L oxygen-rich zone · ② ≥5.0 mg/L aerobic floor · ③ Oxygenated thermocline/sub-thermocline · ④ <4.0 mg/L hypoxic avoidance (×). High aerobic metabolism draws smallmouth to wind-beaten reefs, river rapids, and well-oxygenated deep basins holding cisco, smelt, and gobies.

B Wave-Washed Boulder Shoals, River Rapids & Open Pelagic Layers — High aerobic metabolism draws smallmouth to wind-beaten reefs, river rapids, and well-oxygenated deep basins holding cisco, smelt, and gobies. Treat wind-swept rock reefs, current seams, and oxygenated pelagic bait layers as prime smallmouth zones, verifying fish and forage depth on sonar instead of treating the thermocline as a hard floor.

1. Anatomie et profil physiologique — Achigan à petite bouche (Oxygène dissous et stratification)

A Smallmouth High Dissolved-Oxygen Demand (≥5.0 mg/L O₂) : ① 6-10 mg/L oxygen-rich zone · ② ≥5.0 mg/L aerobic floor · ③ Oxygenated thermocline/sub-thermocline · ④ <4.0 mg/L hypoxic avoidance (×).

2. Comportement par profondeur, habitat et saison

B Wave-Washed Boulder Shoals, River Rapids & Open Pelagic Layers : High aerobic metabolism draws smallmouth to wind-beaten reefs, river rapids, and well-oxygenated deep basins holding cisco, smelt, and gobies.

Smallmouth bass have a higher metabolic oxygen demand (thriving at ≥ 6.0 mg/L DO) than largemouth, which explains their strong affinity for current seams, wind-beaten reefs, and clean rocky basins. Still, a thermocline is a temperature gradient, not an oxygen reading, and it is not a barrier that smallmouth refuse to cross. In many oligotrophic Shield lakes and Great Lakes basins, deep water below the thermocline remains well oxygenated and holds smelt, cisco, or round gobies — and smallmouth freely hunt down to 10–18 m (35–60 ft). In more fertile lakes where deep basins lose oxygen, smallmouth hold on oxygenated mid-depth reefs or suspend with pelagic bait.

Because wind mixing and current continuously recharge dissolved oxygen, wind-blown boulder points, river rapids, and main-lake shoals act as prime smallmouth magnets even during the warmest weeks of summer. Compare flowing water, wind-exposed rock edges, and adjacent depths alongside actual sonar marks rather than assuming a fixed summer depth.

  • Point clé sur l'eau : Treat wind-swept rock reefs, current seams, and oxygenated pelagic bait layers as prime smallmouth zones, verifying fish and forage depth on sonar instead of treating the thermocline as a hard floor.
  • Règle de présentation (Wave-Washed Shoal + River Rapids) : Caler la profondeur, la vibration et les pauses selon 6 - 10 mg/L O₂ (≥ 5.0 mg/L O₂).

FAQ

Does a summer smallmouth have to move deep?

A thermocline is a temperature gradient, not an oxygen measurement or a barrier every bass refuses to cross. Deep water can retain oxygen in some lakes and lose it in others. Vegetation also consumes oxygen at night; dense or dying weeds are not automatically the best habitat. Combine fish and forage observations with local profiles where available. Compare current, healthy weed edges and adjacent depths rather than assigning all fish to one side of the thermocline.
