Fish Measuring Boards & Tournament Rulers: IGFA World Record Standards & Biological Accuracy

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) governs global sportfishing world records. To promote conservation, IGFA offers 'All-Tackle Length World Records' with exacting criteria on measurement and biological verification.

1. IGFA Measuring Device Requirements

  • Rigid Construction Mandate: Must be a rigid, commercially manufactured non-stretch board. All flexible tape measures and fabric rulers are disqualified;
  • 90° Vertical Headstop: The zero line must feature a solid upright bumper at an exact 90-degree angle to the measuring plane;
  • High-Contrast Increments: Scale must be clearly marked in quarter-inches or millimeters with distinct, non-wearing etched numerals.

2. Fork Length (FL) vs Total Length (TL)

  • Total Length (TL): Measured from the closed snout against the headstop to the extreme tip of the caudal fin (standard for bass, walleye, pike, and muskie);
  • Fork Length (FL): Measured from the closed snout to the center fork of the tail fin (standard for salmonids, pelagic gamefish, and open-ocean predators where outer tail tips may be frayed).

3. The 4 IGFA Photographic Integrity Rules

  1. 90° Overhead Angle: Camera must be held directly above the fish center to eliminate perspective parallax distortion;
  2. Zero Gap Snout Contact: The mouth must be fully closed and firmly touching the vertical headstop;
  3. Natural Lateral Alignment: Fish must lie on its side, head facing left, dorsal fin facing away, aligned parallel to the board axis;
  4. Dual Photo Verification: One full-body shot showing headstop contact and tail tip, plus one macro close-up of the caudal fin against the scale.
