Life Jackets & PFDs: USCG & Transport Canada Certification Red Lines

Never wear uncertified fashion life jackets on navigable waters! Both US and Canadian authorities (Coast Guard, OPP, MNRF, State Police) conduct spot checks on the water. If your PFD is non-compliant, you will face hefty fines and be escorted immediately back to the launch dock.

Certification Markings to Inspect on the Tag

  1. USCG Approved Type III or Type V with Type III Performance: Required for US waters. Must state "Approved for use on recreational boats".
  2. Transport Canada (TC) Approved / CAN/CGSB-65.11: Mandatory for Canadian waters. Look for the Maple Leaf symbol and "Transport Canada Approved".
  3. Modern Harmonized Standard (Level 70 / Level 100): Newer PFDs manufactured after 2020 feature a dual US/Canada harmonized Level symbol. A "Level 70" is equivalent to Type III foam/inflatable vests, approved in both countries.

The Mandatory Engine Kill Switch Lanyard (熄火绳)

Whenever combustion outboard speed exceeds idle, the kill switch clip MUST be snapped onto the outboard/console switch and the lanyard clipped to your PFD D-ring or belt loop. If ejected, the engine dies instantly, preventing the "Circle of Death" where the runaway boat circles back and slices the swimming angler with the stainless propeller!
