Sonar & Maps: Forward-Facing Live Sonar Calibration & Fish Behavior
Forward-Facing Live Sonar (FFS — Garmin LiveScope, Lowrance ActiveTarget, Humminbird MEGA Live) shoots a live vertical fan beam ahead of your bow. Instead of seeing history after you drive over a fish, you see the fish swimming 20 m (65 ft) in front of the boat, watch your lure splash down, and watch the fish swim up and eat it in real time.
1. The Three Live Modes Explained
| Mode | Transducer Orientation | Best Fishing Scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| Forward Mode (前视垂直切片模式) | Clicked one notch angled down; projects a thin vertical slice 15–30 m (50–100 ft) ahead and from surface to bottom | Used 85% of the time: sniping suspended bass, casting jerkbaits/swimbaits over boulders and brushpiles |
| Down Mode (正下方实时模式) | Clicked straight down; shows 10 m ahead and 10 m behind directly under the boat | Deep vertical drop-shotting, Damiki rigging, or ice fishing directly below the transducer |
| Perspective / Scout Mode (俯视扇形广角模式) | Rotated flat horizontally; projects a wide top-down radar fan across shallow water | Water under 2.5 m (8 ft): scanning shallow spawning flats, grass edges, docks, and wolfpacks of cruising bass |
2. Dial-In Settings Checklist (How to See a Tiny Jig at 60 Feet Without Screen Clutter)
| Setting | Recommended Value | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Forward Range (前视距离) | 60 to 80 ft (18–24 m) | Setting 120 ft shrinks a 4 lb bass and your 1/8 oz jig into microscopic 2-pixel dots! Keep it at 65–75 ft so targets look big and clear |
| Depth Range (深度范围) | Manual (set 3–5 ft deeper than actual bottom) | Leaving Depth on "Auto" makes the whole screen jump and resize every time you cross a drop-off |
| Gain (增益灵敏度) | 62% to 72% | Cast your lure 50 ft ahead: raise Gain until you can clearly track your lure falling, then back off 2% so background "snow" disappears |
| Noise Reject / TVG / Ghost Reject | Noise = Low/Med, TVG = Low, Ghost Reject = Low/Auto | Setting Noise/Ghost Reject to High erases your fishing lure at 50+ ft! Keep filters Low for maximum lure visibility |
| Color Gain & Trails | Color Gain = 65–75%, Trails = Off or Fast | Makes the dense core of a fish glow bright white/orange so you can judge fish size |
3. How to Read Fish Size, Species, and Mood on Live View
- How to keep your lure inside the beam: The forward beam is only about 20° wide (roughly 3 m / 10 ft wide at 15 m / 50 ft distance). Align your cast right down the trolling motor arrow (or turret pointer). If your lure disappears halfway back, tap the pedal 2 degrees left or right until it lights back up!
- Reading Fish Behavior (Window-Shoppers vs Biters):
- Aggressive Biter: The moment your bait lands or twitches above the fish, the fish tilts its nose up at a 45° angle and streaks upward like a missile—keep the bait moving slightly above its head (never drop a bait below a bass's eyes!) so it has to chase and inhale it.
- Negative / Pressured Fish: The fish rises slowly, stops 30 cm (1 ft) from your lure, stares at it for 3 seconds, and sinks back to the bottom. Do not keep throwing the same bait! Downsize immediately to a lighter line, smaller minnow/Ned rig, or natural colour.
