Trolling Motors: Voltage & Thrust Sizing: 12V, 24V & 36V Formulas
Trolling motor power is measured in Pounds of Thrust (磅推力), which is tied directly to system voltage: 12V, 24V, or 36V.
The Thrust Sizing Formula
- Minimum Baseline Thrust (lb) = (Total Loaded Boat Weight in lb ÷ 100) × 2
- Wind & Current Margin: Add +15 to +25 lb if you fish big windy lakes, heavy grass, or rivers like the St. Lawrence.
- Remember: "Loaded Weight" is not bare hull weight! It is Hull + Outboard + Full Fuel Tank + Livewells Full of Water (30 gal = 250 lb!) + Batteries + Tackle + 2 Anglers.
| System Voltage | Typical Thrust Rating | Batteries Needed | Loaded Boat Weight & Length | Who Should Choose It |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12V System | 40–55 lb | 1 × 12V deep-cycle battery | Under 1,800 lb loaded (12–16 ft Jon boats & light utility aluminum) | Small calm lakes and light aluminum hulls; underpowered for 17+ ft boats in wind |
| 24V System | 70–90 lb | 2 × 12V in series (or 1 × 24V lithium) | 1,800–3,400 lb loaded (16.5–19 ft aluminum & 17–19 ft fiberglass boats) | The sweet spot for 75% of recreational anglers: plenty of punch for windy days without carrying 3 batteries |
| 36V System | 100–115+ lb | 3 × 12V in series (or 1 × 36V lithium) | 3,200–4,800+ lb loaded (19.5–22 ft fiberglass bass boats & 18.5–21 ft heavy Deep-Vs) | Tournament bass anglers, Great Lakes / St. Lawrence current fishermen, and heavy mat-punching in grass |
Why modern 24V/36V dual-voltage Brushless motors (Garmin Force, Lowrance Ghost, Ultrex QUEST, Power-Pole Move) are game-changers: You can buy the motor today and run it on your existing 24V (2-battery) setup at ~80–90 lb thrust; if you later want 100–115 lb thrust, you simply add a third battery (or swap to 36V) without buying a new trolling motor! Plus, brushless motors use 30% less battery power at cruising speeds.
