Sonar & Maps: 2D Traditional CHIRP & Down View Sonar
Why do anglers often put 2D CHIRP Sonar and Down View (Down Imaging / DownScan / ClearVü) side by side on a split screen? Because each one sees what the other misses!
| Feature | 2D CHIRP Sonar (传统 2D 圆锥声呐) | Down View (高清下扫扇形声呐) |
|---|---|---|
| Beam Shape | Wide ice-cream cone (15°–24° angle) covering a circle on the bottom roughly 1/3 as wide as the depth | Razor-thin front-to-back slice (like a photocopy scanner beam) directly beneath the boat |
| How Fish Look | Classic boomerang arches (鱼弧) when moving through the cone, or horizontal spaghetti lines when sitting still | Small bright dots or football specks (never arches, because the beam is paper-thin!) |
| How Cover Looks | Fuzzy blobs—a brushpile looks like a messy cloud, making it hard to tell branches from fish | Near-photographic clarity—you can count individual tree limbs, bridge pilings, boulders, and weed stalks |
| Best Superpower | Reading bottom hardness (底质软硬), spotting fish arches hugging the bottom, and vertical drop-shotting | Distinguishing rock vs wood vs grass and seeing if fish are buried inside a tree |
How to Read Bottom Hardness and Fish on 2D & Down View
- Hard Bottom (Rock / Gravel / Mussel Shell Bed): Reflects a huge echo! On 2D, the bottom line is thick, bright yellow/red/orange, and often shows a "Second Echo" (二次回波)—a faint second bottom line at 2× the depth. On Down View, rocks glow bright white/gold.
- Soft Bottom (Mud / Silt / Muck): Absorbs sound! The bottom line looks thin, fuzzy, and dim.
- Why Fish Arches Turn Into Flat Lines: An arch happens only because the distance between the fish and transducer changes as the boat drives over it (far at the edge of the cone → closest in the center → far again). When you stop the boat on Spot-Lock, a fish sitting under you draws a flat horizontal stripe! And if your drop-shot sinker drops straight down as a vertical line and that horizontal fish stripe rises to meet it—set the hook!
