Sonar & Maps: Side View Sonar Tuning & Structure Identification

Side View (侧扫声呐) is the fastest search tool ever invented. Instead of driving back and forth for hours hoping to run right over a small rock pile, one pass at 6 km/h (4 mph) scans a 60 m (200 ft) wide swath from bank to bank.

Step 1: Understand the Geometry of the Side View Screen

Imagine slicing the water down the middle and folding the left and right sides flat like an open book:

  • The Bright Center Line: Your boat's path moving from top to bottom.
  • The Dark Strip on Both Sides of Center: That is the water column between the transducer and the bottom—NOT a trench under the boat! Anything floating inside that dark strip is suspended in mid-water (baitballs, suspended fish, tree tops).
  • The Colored Outer Halves: The actual lake bottom stretching out to the Left (Port) and Right (Starboard).

Step 2: Dial In the 4 Golden Side-View Settings

ParameterRecommended SettingWhy It Works
Side Range (左右扫描宽度)3× to 4× Water Depth (typically 60–100 ft / 18–30 m per side)In 20 ft of water, set range to 70–80 ft. Setting 150 ft in 6 ft of water compresses targets into tiny unreadable slivers
Boat Speed & Path3 to 5 mph (5–8 km/h) in a straight lineTurning the steering wheel warps the outer edge into blurry smears; idle straight past the target!
Frequency455 kHz for wide search / deep water; 800 kHz or MEGA (1.2 MHz) for ultra-sharp detailMEGA (1.0–1.2 MHz) shows individual boulders and bass shadows within 80 ft
Chart Speed & ContrastMatch Chart Speed to Boat Speed (4 or 5); Palette Amber / Copper / GoldKeeps circular rocks looking round instead of stretched ovals

Step 3: How to Spot Structure and Fish (+ Acoustic Shadows!)

  • The "Flashlight and Shadow" Rule: Side sonar shines like a flashlight from the center line outward. When sound hits a boulder, stump, or suspended fish, the object glows bright white, and it blocks the sound behind it—casting a jet-black shadow (声影) toward the outer edge of the screen!
  • Reading the Shadow:
  • Long black shadow behind a rock or tree = tall vertical structure sticking high off the bottom.
  • Cluster of bright "rice grains" with little black shadows detached to the side = a school of bass or walleye suspended off the bottom! The wider the gap between the white rice grain and its black shadow, the higher that fish is floating off the bottom.
