B Upstream Seam Plume Strategy on Clear Reefs & River Eddies — Cure finesse plastics in amino brine coated with adhesive bite powder, or stuff a brine-soaked cotton ball inside hollow tubes for slow bottom drags. In still water smell and taste rarely start a smallmouth strike, but they often finish one. This is the bass that follows a tube for meters, noses a drop shot and pins a Ned rig to the bottom — a close chemical check in very clear water. Scent buys mouthing time on slack-line finesse rigs, and a bad smell fails the inspection.

Locking-box marinade (water-based) — Taku Ito's idea, honestly scaled down.
- Ingredients: 250 ml (1 cup) water, 4 tbsp (72 g / 2.5 oz) salt, 1 tbsp (5 g) ground dried shrimp, 1 tsp (3 g) garlic powder
- Method: simmer 5 minutes; cool; cover tubes or craws in an airtight locking box; label the date
- Use: age in the fridge one month or more; test a few baits first
- Keeps: 3 months in the fridge
Ito himself uses a commercial liquid and ages it far longer; this heavy brine is the home stand-in. Never mix TPE and PVC baits in one box.
Craw-stock tube stuffing (water-based) — scent from inside the tube.
- Ingredients: master shellfish stock; a pea of cotton ball or sponge
- Method: soak the cotton; push it into the tube's hollow body
- Use: re-soak every 15–20 minutes
- Keeps: 3 days in the fridge, or frozen cubes
Baitfish drop-shot dip (water-based) — goby flavour without the goby.
- Ingredients: 60 ml (1/4 cup) master tinned-fish juice, a pinch of salt
- Method: keep in a small jar on ice
- Use: dip the drop-shot bait every 3–5 drops
- Keeps: 3 days in the fridge
Craw-garlic oil (oil-based) — for tubes and Ned baits dragged over rock.
- Ingredients: 60 ml (1/4 cup) master garlic oil, 1 tsp (2 g) ground dried shrimp
- Method: steep overnight; strain
- Use: a few drops in the bag; one on the bait every 15 minutes
- Keeps: 1 month in the fridge
Deep-water nose drop (oil-based) — a hand-odour mask for nose-hooked baits.
- Ingredients: master tinned-fish oil in a dropper bottle
- Method: none
- Use: one drop after every re-rig or fish; oil lasts a long drop to 9 m (30 ft)
- Keeps: 2–3 weeks in the fridge
Cold-water jig paste (oil-based) — for football jigs and Ned heads.
- Ingredients: master anise sticky paste, plus 1 tsp (2 g) ground dried shrimp
- Method: stir in
- Use: smear on the head and keeper; warm it in a pocket below 10 °C (50 °F)
- Keeps: 2 months in the fridge
Shrimp slime powder (dry) — the master recipe; bag-shake marinated tubes right before use, as Ito does with his commercial powder.
When to use them: tubes, Ned rigs, drop shots and dragged jigs — the baits smallmouth study longest — and above all in cold, clear water when fish are slow. Then wait an extra half-second before you set.
Legal flag: check the rules for your water. Round goby is invasive — using it as bait is illegal in Ontario and restricted around much of the Great Lakes — and crayfish must not be moved between waters; stay with grocery ingredients. Tournament rules may restrict additives.
Don't bother: on jerkbaits, spybaits, topwaters and other moving baits. Keep oil off hair jigs — it mats the hair and kills the action.
