Trout are the most scent-sensitive fish we cover: salmonid noses work at parts-per-billion and guide fish back to their natal stream. Scent cuts both ways: a good one puts a plume into current and buys hold time; a bad one on your hands ends the drift early.

Legal flag, the strongest in this series. Many trout waters are artificial-only or fly-only, where any added scent can count as bait. Roe must come from legally kept fish, moving roe or baitfish between waters is widely restricted, and chumming is commonly illegal. Check the rules for your water; exceptions are written per stream.
Hands first: the L-serine finding. Idler, Fagerlund and Mayoh (1956) found that human hand-rinse water alarmed migrating Pacific salmon at extreme dilution; the trigger was L-serine from skin. A salmon study, but trout share the family nose. Rub hands in stream sand, handle bait last, keep DEET, sunscreen, fuel and nicotine off everything.
Shrimp–krill soak (water-based) — the all-round plume.
- Ingredients: 250 ml (1 cup) hot water, 15 g (1 tbsp) salt, 15 g (2 tbsp) crushed dried shrimp.
- Method: Steep 20 minutes, cool, strain.
- Use: Soak sac mesh, trout worms and tube jigs; re-dip every few drifts.
- Keeps: 3 days refrigerated.
Worm juice (water-based) — for brook trout, the keenest bait eaters.
- Ingredients: 6 chopped nightcrawlers, 60 ml (¼ cup) water, a pinch of salt.
- Method: Mash, rest 10 minutes, strain.
- Use: Drip onto marabou jigs every few casts.
- Keeps: 2 days refrigerated.
Anise–sugar dip (water-based) — for pellet-raised stocked rainbows.
- Ingredients: 120 ml (½ cup) water, 5 g (1 tsp) sugar, 2.5 ml (½ tsp) anise extract.
- Method: Shake until dissolved.
- Use: Dip dough baits, or knead into home-made dough.
- Keeps: 2 weeks refrigerated.
Garlic spinner oil (oil-based) — masks hands, adds taste.
- Ingredients: 30 ml (2 tbsp) canola oil, 1 g (½ tsp) garlic powder.
- Method: Shake; rest overnight.
- Use: A smear on spinners, small spoons and jig heads every 15 minutes.
- Keeps: 2 weeks refrigerated.
Laker spoon paste (oil-based) — stays on deep and cold.
- Ingredients: 30 g (2 tbsp) vegetable shortening, 15 ml (1 tbsp) cod-liver or salmon oil, 5 g (1 tsp) krill powder.
- Method: Mash with a fork.
- Use: Press into a trolling spoon's cup or a tube jig; renew every 30 minutes.
- Keeps: 1 month refrigerated.
Anise–tuna oil (oil-based) — a sticky coat for slow baits.
- Ingredients: oil from one tin of tuna, 3 drops anise oil (extract will not mix).
- Method: Strain, shake.
- Use: Trout worms and egg imitations, where legal.
- Keeps: 1 week refrigerated.
Borax roe cure (dry) — the classic steelhead bait.
- Ingredients: 100 g (3.5 oz) borax, 50 g (1.8 oz) sugar, 25 g (0.9 oz) non-iodized salt.
- Method: Cut skeins bait-size, bag-shake with the cure, refrigerate overnight, air-dry until tacky.
- Use: Tie in spawn sacs or fish a chunk.
- Keeps: 2 weeks refrigerated, months frozen. Borax: keep from children and pets.
When it pays: drifted sacs in tributaries, dough for stocked rainbows, slow jigs. Lake trout strike on silhouette and thump; scent only lengthens the hold. Label jars "NOT FOOD", refrigerate, never dump leftovers.
Don't bother: flies, and spinners cranked at speed — contact time is too short.
